WIPO published world intellectual property indicators of 2016

In the beginning of December, the World Intellectual Property Organization published its annual report on intellectual property indicators, this time concerning the data of 2016. For the first time, information about geographical indications was included in the report.

According to the report, in 2016 a total of 3.1 million patent applications were filed worldwide. China received more applications than the United States of America, Japan, the Republic of Korea and EUIPO combined. The total amount of new applications reached 3.1 million, being 8.3% higher than in 2015.

Additionally, the number of trade mark and design applications grew, 16.4% and 10.4% respectively. The biggest amount of applications were filed in China, followed by the United States of America and Japan concerning trade marks, and the EUIPO and the Republic of Korea concerning designs.
